Post 04: Sketches and Inspirations

My primary inspirations for this project are mostly from Japanese comics and animation. I never really read or cared for "western" comics as a kid, so most of my art and writing is more heavily inspired by video games and anime, specifically of the adventure and role playing genres. I tend to like sci-fi and modern settings and stories far more then medieval fantasy.

Probably the main inspiration for my work, and what got me interested in japanese fiction to begin with is the work of Shotaru Ishinomori, most famous for the manga "Cyborg 009", one of the very first actual "anime" anime/manga series ever made. Ironically, many of the early artists in this style (especially Ishinomori himself, along with Osamu Tezuka, author of Astro Boy, Phoenix) based their art heavily off of western cartoon art, especially that of Disney's.

I also draw a lot of inspiration from more "serious" manga artists, such as the sci-fi works of Masamune Shiro (Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed) and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, dot hack series). While I intend to make some more serious works myself, that will be much, much later on than I feel warrents talking about now.

Video games have also played a huge role in my overall style of work. I love playing adventure, roleplaying, and horror games, and many of the characters I draw are meant to imitate the character designs in those games (affectionately, of course). While sometimes said designs can be overly-complex, overly-risque, or just badly designed (particularily the more recent work of Tetsuya Normura in Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts) I also kind of make fun of these designs, as well. (Such as having Spike wear a belt accross his chest, even though it serves no purpose but to look cool.)

Other influences are the works of Rock, Heavy metal, and pop artists throughout the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. While I don't follow music industry or history much, I do enjoy listening to it, and the personas reflected in the album materials.

This cover right here probably sums up my entire style of comic/writing perfectly.
